Again, more so than ever before, due to the competitive work environment and high unemployment, the job in many instances is awarded to you due to how well you follow up! Just as when you were closing for the job in Pillar II, Perform you have three opportunities to follow up immediately upon conclusion of your interview. It is crucial and expected that you follow up within 6 hours of your interview. Depending on how competitive you feel the situation is and how well you feel you accomplished Step 1, Establish/Develop Rapport of the 6-Step Sales Process in Pillar II, Perform will determine how aggressive you follow up. The four mediums that can be utilized are:
- Leaving behind a hand written follow up immediately upon completion of your interview (I only recommend this if you are sure the interviewer will receive and you must still follow up with one of the other three mediums).
- Voice message (if you have the individual’s cell phone number).
- Smart phone (only if you have no access to any other way to follow up within 6 hour by handwritten, e-mail or voice mail).
- E-mail, a must as soon as you are able to, it can be after you have left a hand written thank you, a voice message or a smart phone follow up, but again, the email follow up is essential and without it you are jeopardizing your chance to win the job. There are two types of e-mail follow up letters; you're basic follow up and the silver bullet follow up letter to be discussed in detail with examples.
What is the fine line between Pursue and Pester?
Pursue can encompass two of the mediums mentioned above, for example, an immediate hand written note and an official e-mail within 6 hours or voice mail with e-mail to follow or smart phone follow up with e-mail to follow, the constant is an e-mail after one of the other three that you may chose.
Pester would entail utilizing all four mediums within the first 6 hours of your interview. Also can be considered…stalking.
